Victorian Agate and Sterling Silver Vinaigrette 

In good vintage condition, this is a beautiful oval vinaigrette. It has been beautifully made with the lid being inset with a banded brown agate surrounded by a swirling engraved engine-turned pattern. 

The pattern on the agate is a little faded at the top, this is commensurate with its age and is reflected in the price.

The inside is gilded and the pierced grill is intricately engraved.

It has a loop on the top so could be worn as a necklace.

Vinaigrettes held small sponges soaked in vinegar or essential oils beneath the perforated grills. They were used as smelling salts to counteract the smells of the unsanitary world.

There are no maker or date marks.
