George III Sterling Silver Octagonal Vinaigrette from 1802

George III Sterling Silver Octagonal Vinaigrette from 1802

In good vintage condition, this is a beautiful octagonal vinaigrette.

Inside the filigree pierced grill is gilded and very beautiful.

Vinaigrettes held small sponges soaked in scented vinegar or essential oils beneath the perforated grills. They were used as smelling salts to counteract the smells of the unsanitary world.

The outside has some dark marks like it, these are commensurate with its age and reflected in the price.

Hallmarked: Made by IT in Birmingham in 1802. A similar mark was registered in October 1773 by John Turner.

Silver weight: 14.7g

Size: 2cm by 2cm and 1.1cm deep.
