George IV Sterling Silver Vinaigrette

In good vintage condition, this is a beautiful rectangular vinaigrette. It is decorated with an engraved engine-turned decoration and raised border on the top.

It has a cartouche in the centre that has been engraved with an H.

Inside the intricately pierced grill is gilded.

Vinaigrettes held small sponges soaked in vinegar or essential oils beneath the perforated grills. They were used as smelling salts to counteract the smells of the unsanitary world.

Hallmarked: Made by Thomas & William Simpson in Birmingham in 1822.

Silver weight: 14.8g

Size: 3.8cm by 2.3cm and 1cm deep.
