Victorian Sterling Silver Vinaigrette by David Pettifer from 1850

Victorian Sterling Silver Vinaigrette

In good vintage condition, this is a beautiful rectangular vinaigrette with a lovely curvy shape. It is decorated with an engraved engine-turned design and an empty cartouche. We can monogram it for you, £25 for one letter or £35 for two.

Inside the pierced grill is engraved and gilded.

Vinaigrettes held small sponges soaked in scented vinegar or essential oils beneath perforated grills. They were used as smelling salts and to counteract the smells of the unsanitary world. It is sold with its original pad.

Hallmarked: Made by David Pettifer in Birmingham in 1850.

Silver weight: 14.7g
