Pair of Framed Sterling Silver Etchings of Moritz Oppenheim’s Paintings
These are two rare framed etchings of esteemed artist Moritz Oppenheim’s paintings. They are framed with lovely wooden frames and make a striking pair. The two etchings are of:
The Wedding by Moritz Oppenheim 1866
As the number of marriages permitted to Jews was restricted until 1846, this occasion resonates politically.
Oppenheim sets the wedding in the courtyard of the old synagogue in the Frankfurt ghetto. Following German Jewish custom, the bride and groom stand with their heads jointly covered with a tallit under the chuppah. They wear the traditional bridal belts decorated with gold that they have previously exchanged. The bride extends the index finger of her right hand to receive the wedding ring. Afterward, rather than crushing the wineglass underfoot, the groom throws it at the plaque decorated with the Star of David on the staircase. Standing in readiness for the celebration are a musician and harlequin hired to entertain.
A copy of this hangs in The Jewish Museum New York.

A Rabbi’s Blessing by Moritz Oppenheim 1866
Oppenheim shows the cultural diversity of Frankfurt's Jews by depicting a man in Polish dress. After the Sabbath morning service, a devout father, wearing the long coat and streimel of Polish Jews, asks the venerable rabbi to bless his child. The kindhearted rabbi is believed to be Tobias Sondheimer, and the figures are thought to be his son and grandson. Sondheimer served as leader of the synagogue in Oppenheim's hometown, Hanau, from 1795 to 1830.
