Austrian 800 Gilded Silver Church Communion Set of Chalice and Paten

In good vintage condition, this is a beautiful decorative gilded 800 silver Austrian church chalice and paten. Often such communion sets are divided through time. Complete sets are rare.

The chalice would hold wine during communion and the paten is the plate used to hold communion wafers.

They are sold in their original padded box. 

The chalice is decorated with six wheat sheaves which mirrors the hexagonal,  pedestal foot. The base is decorated with an engraved brick pattern.

The paten has a plain circular form and is gilded on the top.  This paten can also be inverted to form a secure cover for the wine.

The paten has some minor scratches on it, commensurate with its age and this is reflected in the price.

It has a silver CHI RHO: Christ symbol on the front.

The Chi Rho symbol is the oldest of the Christograms, this symbol is made up of the first two letters of Christ in Greek (Χριστός), X (chi) and P (rho). The letters are often overlayed on top of each other. It was used by Constantine I in 312 A.D.

Hallmarked: 800. There are no maker or date marks.

Total Silver Weight: 850.8g. Goblet: 724g, Paten: 126.8g

Size: The chalice is 20.5cm tall. The top has a 9.5cm diameter. The base is 14.5cm by 14.5cm.

The paten has a 14.4cm diameter.
